How to Get to the City

Most travelers arrive through Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s busiest and most efficient hubs. From Schiphol, it’s incredibly easy to get into the city center:

  • By train: The direct train to Amsterdam Central Station takes just 15–20 minutes. Trains run frequently, and tickets are affordable.
  • By bus: If you’re heading to areas not served by the train, buses connect the airport to different neighborhoods.
  • By taxi or Uber: Convenient but pricier, around €40–€50 into the center.

If you’re coming by train from other European cities, Amsterdam Central Station is as central as it gets, placing you right in the heart of the city, so perfect for a 24-hour Amsterdam trip.

How to Get Around Amsterdam

Amsterdam is famously compact, which makes it easy to explore in a day. You have a couple of options to get around the city:

  • Walking: The best way to feel the atmosphere of the canals.
  • Cycling: Rent a bike and ride like the Dutch. Just watch out for traffic rules, because here bikes have priority!
  • Public transport: Trams and buses are frequent and easy to navigate with an OV-chipkaart (a reloadable travel card) or just tap with your card.
  • Ferries: Free ferries cross the IJ river, especially handy if you want to explore Amsterdam North, they run every couple of minutes, and you don’t need any ticket/reservation before.

For one day, you’ll likely walk most of it, with maybe a tram ride or two if you’re short on time.

Amsterdam Layover: Useful Facts

Many travelers first meet Amsterdam during a layover at Schiphol. If that’s you, here’s are some things you will need to know.

Time needed. Consider to venture into the city if you have at least 6 hours between your flights so you can have the time to explore comfortably and return to the airport without running around.

Visa requirements. Non-Schengen travelers should double-check if they need a visa for short city access.

Luggage. Schiphol offers lockers, or you can take the bags with you and leave them at the Central Station baggage storage if you need some things from the bag later.

Transport. Getting to the city is easy and fast in less than 20 minutes, but keep in mind when returning to the airport to have enough time for security check.

Even a few hours are enough for a stroll by the canals, a coffee at a cute café, and a quick museum visit. This makes Amsterdam one of the best cities in Europe for a layover trip in my opinion.

One Day in Amsterdam: The Perfect Itinerary

Here’s how to spend an unforgettable day in Amsterdam, starting bright and early.

10:00 AM – Breakfast at Pat’s Poffertjes Nieuwendijk

Start your day the Dutch way, with poffertjes! As soon as you arrive at the Central Station head to this location nearby. There you’ll find sweet, create your own options, from fluffy classic ones to the ones covered in Nutella and bananas. Fuel up, because you’ve got a busy day ahead.

10:30 AM – Stroll Along the Canals and Dam Square

After breakfast, take a walk along the canals. Snap some photos of the iconic narrow houses leaning over the water and make your way toward Dam Square, the city’s historic heart. You’ll see the Royal Palace, the National Monument, and plenty of street performers.

Also, don’t forget that if you want to try the famous cookies from Van Stapele Koekmakerij you should know that the location is only a couple of minutes away from the square.

11:30 AM – Visit the Anne Frank House

From Dam Square, it’s only a short walk to reach the Anne Frank House. This museum offers a powerful and moving experience, guiding you through the hidden annex where Anne and her family lived. Just remember that this location needs tickets booked in advance since it’s such a visited spot in Amsterdam, so make sure to plan ahead.

12:30 PM – Explore the Jordaan District

The Jordaan is probably my favorite area in Amsterdam. It is also well known for being one of Amsterdam’s most charming neighborhoods. It has plenty boutique shops and art galleries to explore. Or you can just grab a coffee and stroll through the narrow streets. Don’t forget to have your phone charged, you will want to take photos at every corner.

2:00 PM – Lunch at Foodhallen

You are probably feeling hungry by now. Then it is just the perfect time to head to another cool place. The best way to get there is to walk, for around 15 minutes, and you will arrive at a trendy indoor food market housed in a former tram depot. Welcome to Foodhallen, the place where you can sample dishes from around the world, from Vietnamese spring rolls to Dutch cheese sandwiches.

3:00 PM – Van Gogh Museum or Rijksmuseum

Dedicate your afternoon to art. If you are visiting for only one day I recommend choosing only one of them, so that you will have plenty of time to enjoy and not rush through it. Depending on your preference:

  • The Van Gogh Museum offers an intimate look at the artist’s life and most famous works.
  • The Rijksmuseum is a broader dive into Dutch Golden Age art.

Whichever you choose, expect to spend at least 90 minutes here and have your tickets ready before.

PRO TIP Keep in mind that the tickets have an allocated time slot, so be sure to get there 10 minutes before.

5:00 PM – Relax at Vondelpark

After exploring some of the best museums in the city, it’s time to unwind with a walk through Vondelpark. This green oasis is a favorite among locals for picnics, jogging, and cycling. It’s a nice breather before the sunset.

6:00 PM – Early Dinner at The Seafood Bar

After a busy day of exploring, treat yourself to a feast at The Seafood Bar. Known for its fresh oysters, lobster platters, and beautifully prepared fish dishes, this restaurant is a paradise for seafood lovers. Its modern, yet relaxed atmosphere makes it the perfect place to wind down while enjoying some of the best seafood in Amsterdam.

Evening activities options

I would say that no visit to Amsterdam is complete without a canal cruise. Board a boat for a one-hour ride through the illuminated canals. It’s romantic, relaxing, and gives you a different perspective of the city’s beauty.

There are many options to choose from, but this was my favourite (it includes also the visit to the Heineken Experience).

If you plan to spend more time in the city you can find all the information you need in this Amsterdam guide.

If you prefer to stay in the city longer you will have plenty of things to try. Everybody knows that Amsterdam has an incredible nightlife, so you will find many pubs opened till morning. You can also try sipping cocktails on stylish rooftop bars or dance till dawn in clubs. For something more low-key, wander through the Red Light District, not just for its reputation, but also for its buzzing energy and neon-lit canals.

Amsterdam is bursting with character. In just 24 hours in Amsterdam, you can discover art, history, canals, and culture while still enjoying some relaxed moments in cafes and parks. Whether it’s a layover, a weekend trip, or the first stop on a longer European adventure, this city never fails to leave an impression.
