The only guide you need before going to London

If there is a city that can offer you the ultimate travel experience it has to be London. You can spend the weekend, 10 days, two weeks or a whole month, and still it wouldn’t be enough to discover the city. And you would still need more time to get to discover this city. But there are some things you need to know before travelling there in order to make the most of your trip. And here is the only guide you need before going to London.

Why London should be on your travel list?

Because London is a global capital, where 37% of the population living in London was born outside of the UK, with such a diversity in culture and religion, with so many languages spoken, one of the best financial centres, and some of the world’s top universities.

And if you’re worried about it being too urban, here’s something fascinating—40% of London is green space! From Hyde Park to Regent’s Park, from hidden gardens to riverside walks, London is the greenest city of its size in the world.

Arriving in London

If you are arriving by plane, I highly recommend taking the National Express bus, from any of London’s airports. It’s an affordable and convenient option, with multiple stops throughout the city. The best way to save money? Purchase your tickets in advance, as prices can be significantly lower when booked ahead of time.

Alternatively, if you’re landing at Heathrow, you can take the Heathrow Express, which will get you to Paddington Station in just 15 minutes. For those arriving at Gatwick, the Gatwick Express is a fast and efficient way to reach central London. Stansted Airport is best accessed via the Stansted Express, which takes you directly to Liverpool Street Station.

If you prefer a more budget-friendly option, the London Underground (Tube) also connects Heathrow to central London via the Piccadilly Line or Elizabeth Line. It’s cheaper than the express trains but takes a little longer.

When considering how to get around the city you should know that London has one of the best public transport networks. That means that is very easy to get around the city. You can purchase an individual ticket by paying using a contactless card, which I prefer, because at the end of the day you get a capped fare. Another method to use is t purchase an Oyster Card.

Tube stations are easily recognisable with the distinctive London Underground logo. A red circle with the text “Underground” featured in a blue box.

With my help you will get all your information with the only guide you need before going to London, from where to stay, what to eat and must see attractions for first time visitors in London.

Where to stay

Regarding your accommodation, you have two options. Either book a hotel/apartment in the center, that is at a walkable distance from everything you want to visit. Or make sure your hotel/ accommodation is near the tube station since that is the fastest way to get around the city.

I would always choose the second option since hotels in London are quite expensive. You can stay further away if you have a good connection to transportation. Keep in mind to purchase an Oyster card or a Travelcard, because this way it would be cheaper to pay for the ride.

When to visit

London is a city that can be visited year-round. It doesn’t have an extreme climate, so you can go anytime you want, depending on your preference. In spring, the weather can be mild but wet, but after Easter, I consider it the best. Because as the summer will start everything will be crowded, but you can enjoy more sunlight.

Whilst winter can be cold, the Christmas season is actually my favorite time to be in London. London is one of the best-decorated cities for the holidays. Everything around the city gives you such an amazing vibe. You can’t miss the spectacular New Year’s celebrations and, of course, the January sales.

What to eat while in London

London’s food scene is as diverse as its people. While you’re here, make sure to try:

  • Full English Breakfast – A hearty meal consisting of eggs, sausages, bacon, beans, toast, and more. You’ll find it in most pubs and cafes.
  • Afternoon Tea – A British tradition featuring tea, scones, and finger sandwiches. You can enjoy this experience at luxury hotels like The Ritz or at more budget-friendly spots like The Wolseley.
  • Fish and Chips – A classic British dish. Try it at Poppie’s Fish & Chips or Golden Union.
  • Sunday Roast – A comforting meal featuring roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, vegetables, and gravy.
  • Street Food – Visit Borough Market for a variety of delicious street food, from international cuisines to fresh pastries.
