Visiting Lago di Garda: Epic Places to See

If there is one place in northern Italy that perfectly blends mountains, turquoise water, charming villages, and incredible food, it’s Lake Garda (or Lago di Garda, as Italians call it). So let me show you the most epic places to see when visiting Lago di Garda.

I still remember the first time I saw it, driving along winding roads with dramatic cliffs on one side and sparkling blue water on the other. It honestly felt like a scene from a movie. One minute you’re walking through medieval streets, the next you’re eating fresh pasta by the lake while sailboats glide across the horizon.

What I love most about Lago di Garda is how diverse it is. You can explore romantic towns, swim in crystal-clear water, hike in the mountains, visit castles, or even spend a day at a theme park with your kids. It’s the kind of destination that works whether you’re traveling as a couple, with friends, or planning a family vacation.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the most epic places to see around Lago di Garda, plus tips on where to stay, what to eat, and mini itineraries for some of the most beautiful towns around the lake.

Where Is Lago di Garda?

But first, let me tell you a little about this place. Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy, located in the northern part of the country between the regions of Lombardy, Veneto, and Trentino-Alto Adige.

It stretches for more than 50 km (31 miles) and sits at the foot of the Alps, creating one of the most spectacular landscapes in Italy.

So what makes Lago di Garda so unique, in my opinion, is the contrast: in the north, dramatic mountains rise straight from the lake, but in the south, the scenery becomes softer, with vineyards, olive groves, and charming historic towns.

Because the Alps protect the lake from colder weather, the area enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, which means palm trees, olive trees, and lemon groves grow here.

Why Lago di Garda Should Be On Your List

Let me be honest. If you have to choose between Italian lakes, choose this one. I know that most people often default to Como.

But Garda? Garda is more fun, more diverse, and honestly more liveable. And let me tell you why I believe that.

First of all, because it is made for exploring. You are not stuck in one town. You move, you discover. And I think that it works for every type of traveler. Couples, families and solo travellers, they can all find something to do and discover their own version of Garda.

Secondly, I would say it’s less “try-hard luxury”. Obviously you can still do luxury, but it does feel less intimidating.

And of course one other reason why you should consider visiting Lago di Garda is the food scene. It is so underrated. Fresh fish from the lake, local wines and handmade pasta, plus fewer tourist traps than you’d expect.

Where to Stay when visiting Lago di Garda

Choosing your base = choosing your vibe. What I recommend is to choose a town where to book your accommodation, and then do daily trips to other towns.

Choose SIRMIONE if it’s your first time here. It is romantic and iconic, plus walkable and close to major attractions.

My hotel suggestions:

  • Luxury: Grand Hotel Terme (lakefront + spa = dream stay)
  • Mid-range: Hotel Sirmione e Promessi Sposi (perfect location)
  • Budget: Hotel Flaminia (great value + views)
Accommodation near Garda Lake

Why you should stay here: first of all because the place is walkable, so you will not need a car to get around, which will take some stress off, because finding a parking place here at the weekend is a strength test of your will. Then, you need to consider the fact that it is close to major attractions. And of course for the views.

Choose RIVA DEL GARDA if you are looking for mountain views and more activities.

Hotel ideas:

Choose BARDOLINO / LAZISE if you are looking for a laid-back vibe and slow mornings.

Hotel ideas:

  • Boutique: Corte Valier
  • Budget: small guesthouses near the lake

One of the Best Experiences: Driving Around Lago di Garda

If there’s one thing I recommend doing here, it’s renting a car and driving around the lake.

There is a scenic road called the Gardesana, which circles the lake and connects many of its towns. The drive itself is an adventure. You’ll get to see medieval castles, cliffside villages, tiny beaches and of course, lemon groves and olive trees along the road.

You will pass through many towns, so stop wherever you feel like taking a photo. Take your time. Stop for espresso. Swim in the lake. That’s the beauty of exploring Lago di Garda and what makes this experience unique.

Rent your car from Verona or Milano for better prices.

Visiting Sirmione: The Jewel of Lago di Garda

Sirmione is easily one of the most iconic places on Lago di Garda. This town sits on a narrow peninsula, in the southern point of the lake, surrounded by water on three sides, which means the views are absolutely spectacular.

Views from the Fortress

The moment you arrive, you’ll walk across a small bridge and enter through the impressive medieval fortress. There are 2 places that are a must visit here.

Scaligero Castle. This castle is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Italy, surrounded by water and defensive walls. Inside you can climb the towers for beautiful views over the lake.

Grotte di Catullo. At the tip of the peninsula you’ll find the ruins of an ancient Roman villa overlooking the lake. The views here are incredible. Just imagine Roman aristocrats relaxing here centuries ago.

If you want to visit both, I would recommend purchasing the GARDA INTEGRATED TICKET, which is 20€.

Parking & Tips for Sirmione

Park at: Piazzale Monte Baldo (closest) or Largo Faselo Bitinico (cheaper). Expect to pay €2–3/hour or ~€15/day.

Parking situation (important): DO NOT try to drive into the old town!

Mini Itinerary for Sirmione

Start your day with breakfast at a lakeside café and order a cappuccino with a cornetto.(the Italian version of a croissant, usually filled with chocolate or peach cream).

Begin your day early before the crowds arrive. Just keep in mind that it shouldn’t be before 9 o’clock, because it is not a fast paced area. You will see people slowly opening their stores, take a coffee at the local corner cafe and only after that beginning their work day.

Restaurants in Sirmione

Walk through the historic centre, discover hidden corners and take photos of the harbour. And you should definitely go up and explore Scaliger Castle.

For lunch choose a restaurant overlooking the water and order specialties like risotto with lake fish or fresh pasta with seafood. If you prefer something fancy I would tell you to choose La Speranzina. Or for casual dining Trattoria Nonna Dina.

In the afternoon walk to the Grotte di Catullo and explore the Roman ruins. On the way back, stop for gelato and stroll along the lake promenade. And you must stay for the sunset, it is pure magic how it reflects over the water.

Visiting Riva del Garda: Where Mountains Meet the Lake

At the northern tip of the lake lies Riva del Garda, a place that feels completely different from the southern towns. Here, the lake is surrounded by dramatic cliffs and alpine scenery. It almost feels like a fjord.

This is also one of the best spots for windsurfing and sailing, thanks to the strong winds that regularly blow across the lake.

What to Do in Riva del Garda

There are plenty of activities to do. Or you can just take it slow and just walk around. And that’s the best part about visiting Lago di Garda in my opinion. You don’t need to have a checklist of places that you must get to. You just go for a stroll and discover places as you go.

You can walk the historic centre, because the old town is full of pastel buildings, charming piazzas, and small boutiques. Visiting the waterfront promenade is also a memorable experience, especially at sunset.

If you liking cycling or hiking you must take Strada del Ponale, the famous path that is a scenic route carved in the rocks going around the lake.

Mini Itinerary for Riva del Garda

Take your coffee with a view in Piazza III November before walking along the lake promenade. Climb Torre Apponale, the medieval tower for some spectacular views over the lake.

For Lunch stop for an aperitivo, an Aperol Spritz of course, and some bites. Or go for pizza with fresh mozzarella.

As for the afternoon you can choose the vibe you want. If you are looking for adventure, bike the Ponale Trail. However, if your priority is to relax chill by the lake or rent a paddle board.

Family Fun: Visiting Gardaland and Caneva Aquapark

If you’re traveling with kids (or honestly just love theme parks), you’ll find plenty to do here.

Gardaland

Gardaland is the largest amusement park in Italy, located near the town of Peschiera del Garda, in the south part of the lake. The park features roller coasters, themed rides and fantasy worlds. It’s honestly a full-day adventure.

🎟 Tickets & Prices start from €47. Depending on the month and day, you can get prices as high as €54 if you visit mid-summer or the weekend. You will get discounted prices only if you purchase online, and access the attraction on the booked date.

🚗 Parking is available on-site for around ~€6–7/day. The park opens at 10 AM so make sure to arrive around that time to be ready to have a full day of fun!

I do have a strategy mode to recommend to you once you are inside the park. After the park opens head straight to some of the bigger attractions, as these are the ones that will have long queues faster. Check the Raptor, Oblivion and Shaman roller coasters if you like adrenaline.

If you are a fan of Jumanji you will have a great time as they have some newly opened rides.

My favourite though are Fuga de Atlantide and Jungle Rapids, both rides on water. Be ready for an adventure, and maybe to get splashed. Maybe just a little!

You have plenty of cafes inside the park to stop and grab a bite. You get served pretty quick, but at the same time, you are inside an amusement park, it is going to be expensive. So just grab a drink and a snack and maybe after you leave the park head to Peschiera del Garda for better food.

Caneva Aquapark

If you want something more relaxing and perfect for summer heat, this is your reset day. Visit Caneva Aquapark, which is best for a mix of relaxing and fun.

This park includes lazy rivers, wave pools, huge water slides and tropical themes areas, so plenty for you to do and enjoy. It’s a great way to cool off during a hot Italian summer.

Tickets are €34 for adults and €28 for kids. If you are traveling with kids with height under 100 cm (3 feet and 3.3 inches) keep in mind that they will have free entrance, but they will not be allowed on any of the slides.

💡 Tip: Download the park app → live wait times = game changer

Other Beautiful Towns Around Lago di Garda

While Sirmione and Riva del Garda are highlights, there are many more charming places worth visiting around Lago di Garda.

Malcesine is famous for its castle and cable car that takes you up to Monte Baldo. The views from the top are unforgettable.

Limone sul Garda is one of the most picturesque towns around the lake, with colorful houses and lemon groves cascading down the hills.

Bardolino is known for its wine and relaxed lakeside atmosphere, so long walks after a dinner is exactly the vibe you are looking for.

As I mentioned, depending on what you like and the type of trip you are looking for, you can choose the right towns to stop in.

An extra day for your itinerary: Go to Verona

I know what you will think… why would I want to leave this place?

And it’s true, visiting Lago di Garda is an experience on its own, you have so many places that you will want to explore, but since you are in this area you should take the opportunity to visit one of the most romantic cities in Italy.

The best part is that it’s only about a 30–40 minute drive from the southern part of the lake, but the vibe shift is real. You go from lakeside calm to historic elegance, cobblestone streets, and that soft Italian city energy that feels straight out of a movie.

Verona

Just imagine, you will get to see pastel buildings, hidden piazzas, and of course the Arena and Juliet’s Balcony.

How I would recommend you to plan the trip is to leave Lago di Garda in the afternoon, drive toward the countryside just outside Verona, and check into something a bit more peaceful.

Stay at Relais Ca’ Morenica

This is not just a place to sleep, it’s one of those stays that becomes part of the experience. Surrounded by vineyards and greenery, Relais Ca’ Morenica feels like a quiet escape after the energy of the lake. It’s also perfectly located between Lago di Garda and Verona, which makes it ideal for this kind of itinerary.

What I love about it: peaceful countryside setting, beautiful elegant rooms, and a pool area perfect for unwinding. For the evening, have dinner nearby (this area is known for tortellini, so don’t skip it). You can also enjoy a glass of wine in a quiet atmosphere and have an early night.

And next morning head to Verona. Visit the Arena and the historic center. And this is where your next story begins.

This little detour adds something your Lago di Garda trip doesn’t fully give you: a classic Italian city experience.

Final Thoughts: Why Lago di Garda Should Be on Your Italy Bucket List

There are places that look beautiful in photos. And then there are places that feel magical when you experience them in real life.

Lake Garda is definitely the second kind.

From the medieval streets of Sirmione to the dramatic mountain scenery of Riva del Garda, every part of the lake offers something unique.

Lago di Garda is not the kind of place you rush. It’s the kind of place

It’s the kind of place where you stop for coffee and stay for an hour, you take a “quick walk” that turns into sunset and you plan to see one thing and accidentally discover five more. And honestly, that’s why I love this place.
