Obviously it is not necessary, you can take the tram or the buses, but I have tried it both ways and I saw a huge difference. Attractions are not that close together, so it can be overwhelming to just try to find the closest means of transport every time you want to move around. I’m going to admit that looking for parking at noon in Downtown San Diego is not that fun either, but I would still choose that. So here are some tips for moving around.

• Car Rentals: Numerous car rental companies are available at San Diego International Airport and throughout the city. Renting a car is the most convenient way to explore all the attractions at your own pace.
• Parking: While downtown and beach areas can get busy, parking is generally manageable. Many attractions offer parking lots, and metered street parking is available in most urban areas.
• Public Transportation: If you prefer not to drive, San Diego’s public transportation system, including buses and the trolley, is efficient and can get you to most major attractions. The trolley is particularly useful for getting around downtown and neighbouring areas.
• Bike Rentals: For a more eco-friendly option, consider renting bikes. San Diego is bike-friendly, with numerous bike paths and lanes, especially along the coast and in parks.

San Diego Family Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Paradise

This marine theme park is a must-visit, offering a mix of thrilling rides, animal exhibits, and live shows.

Start your visit with the Orca Encounter. The powerful and graceful orcas are the stars of the show, and their performances are both educational and awe-inspiring. Next, head to the Sea Lion and Otter Spotlight. These playful creatures never fail to entertain with their antics.

The Whaley House Museum is a must-visit. Known as one of the most haunted houses in America, it’s full of history and, allegedly, a few ghosts. Don’t worry, it’s all in good fun, and the stories are more fascinating than frightening.

The Old Town is a great place to try some of the coolest Food Tours. The one that I recommend is Tequila and Tacos Walking Tour. You will sample tacos and tequila from 3 local restaurants from around the Old Town and you will also hear stories from the birthplace of California. Plus one of the stops is at Cafe Coyote, an authentic Mexican restaurant. And believe me, you will not be disappointed that you stopped here!

Evening: Dinner and Dance

If you are still feeling hungry, for dinner you could try Casa de Reyes in Old Town. It offers a delightful blend of traditional Mexican cuisine and lively atmosphere. The outdoor courtyard, often filled with the sounds of live mariachi music, creates a festive setting. Try the carne asada or the fish tacos – both are mouth-wateringly good.

As night falls, consider staying in Old Town for some live entertainment. The Cygnet Theatre offers a variety of performances, from classic plays to contemporary productions. It’s a great way to wind down after a day of excitement, offering a bit of culture and relaxation.

Night: Return to the Hotel

Return to your hotel for a good night’s sleep. If the kids are still buzzing with energy, the hotel’s evening s’mores on the beach is a great way to cap off the day. Gather around the fire pits, roast marshmallows, and share stories about your adventures.

Day 3: Beach Day and Beyond

Morning: La Jolla Adventures

Start your final day of your family trip to San Diego with a visit to La Jolla. Known for its impressive coastline and upscale village atmosphere, La Jolla is a treasure trove of natural beauty and outdoor activities.

Begin at La Jolla Cove, a picturesque spot perfect for snorkelling and spotting sea lions. Don’t forget to visit the Jim’s cave, which has the entrance through The Cave store. There is a 10 dollar fee to go inside. To reach the cave you have to go down the 145 steps through the tunnel built into it.

The La Jolla Underwater Park is a protected marine reserve, offering excellent snorkeling and kayaking opportunities. Rent some gear from a local shop and dive into the crystal-clear waters. The kids will be thrilled to see colourful fish and, if they’re lucky, a friendly sea lion swimming by.

Late Morning: Birch Aquarium

Next, head to the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This educational yet entertaining venue offers a glimpse into the marine research conducted by Scripps.

The interactive exhibits and the touch pools, where kids can gently interact with sea stars and other marine creatures, are particularly popular.

Their lobster roll and the kids’ menu items, like grilled cheese and chicken tenders, are crowd-pleasers. Other cool options in the area are: Sugar and Scribe, Pizza Port or Crack Shack.

After lunch, it’s beach time! La Jolla Shores is a family-friendly beach with gentle waves, making it ideal for swimming and boogie boarding. The wide sandy expanse is perfect for building sandcastles or simply lounging and soaking up the sun.

Evening: Explore Gaslamp Quarter

As the afternoon winds down, make your way to the Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego. This historic district is a lively hub of dining, shopping, and entertainment. Stroll along the gaslamp-lit streets, taking in the Victorian architecture and vibrant atmosphere.
