Activities: GetYourGuide / GoCity

Getting around: car/bus

Now, let’s dive into your epic 7-day Montenegro itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival in Podgorica

Arrive at Podgorica Airport. As Montenegro is best visited with a car, I would definitely recommend picking up a rental. Drive to your hotel and check-in. You get to spend the afternoon around the city. Explore the charming capital city of Podgorica, with its historic landmarks, bustling markets, and lively cafes. In the evening you can enjoy a traditional Montenegrin dinner at a local restaurant, sampling dishes like Ćevapi (grilled minced meat) and Pljeskavica (Balkan burger). Pasta and fish are really good all around Montenegro, so if you are interested in that I would recommend 21 MNE Urban Bistro.

Day 2: Lake Skadar and Stari Bar Adventure

Morning: Hit the road early and drive to Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans. Stop for breakfast in the charming town of Virpazar. Embark on a boat tour of Lake Skadar, cruising through its serene waters and spotting diverse wildlife along the way. Be sure to visit the viewpoint in Virpazar for stunning panoramic views of the lake and surrounding countryside.

Afternoon: Continue your journey to the ancient town of Stari Bar, nestled in the hills above the Adriatic Sea. Explore the well-preserved ruins of the old town, including medieval churches, fortifications, and winding streets. End the day with a delicious dinner at a local restaurant, savoring traditional Montenegrin cuisine and local wines.

Morning: Drive to the coastal town of Budva and spend the morning exploring its picturesque Old Town, with its narrow cobblestone streets and medieval architecture. Don’t miss a visit to the Citadel for stunning views of the Adriatic Sea. You will love all the cute shops with lavender soaps and olive oil.

Afternoon: Head to the exclusive island resort of Sveti Stefan and take a walk along its pristine beaches. If you’re feeling adventurous, rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the crystal-clear waters surrounding the island.

Late Afternoon: Continue your coastal journey to the charming town of Petrovac. Relax on its sandy beaches or take a stroll along the promenade lined with cafes and shops. Evening: Enjoy dinner at a seaside restaurant in Petrovac, indulging in fresh seafood and local Montenegrin wine as you soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere. After dinner, take a leisurely evening walk along the waterfront to admire the twinkling lights reflecting off the Adriatic Sea.

Your Epic Montenegro itinerary will not be ruined even if it rains. That actually was the situation for 2 of the days I was there. But you can easily explore the Old Town since the streets are narrow and in many cases covered by arcades. If you are concerned about parking, you shouldn’t, because there are major parking lots outside the main tourist areas. And they are affordable, so you won’t ruin your travel budget.

Day 4: Bay of Kotor Exploration

Morning: Drive to the Bay of Kotor and start your day with a visit to the stunning Perast. Take a boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks island and explore the charming church and museum.

Afternoon: Continue your journey to Kotor and spend the afternoon exploring its UNESCO-listed Old Town. Climb the ancient city walls for panoramic views of the bay and visit landmarks like St. Tryphon Cathedral and the Maritime Museum. Bonus activity: if you are driving don’t miss going down the road Kotor Serpentine. The views are spectacular.

Evening: Enjoy dinner at one of Kotor’s waterfront restaurants, savoring fresh seafood and local specialties while watching the sunset over the bay. Or stop by one of the lively bars or wine bars for a nightcap and enjoy live music or traditional performances. Some places that I would recommend to dine at are La Catedral Pasta Bar, Little bay garden or Pepe Nero.

**Climbing to the fortress of St. John is an unforgettable experience that offers spectacular views of the Bay of Kotor and surrounding landscapes. The hike involves navigating steep stairs and uneven terrain, so be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring plenty of water.

Day 5: Tivat and Herceg Novi Discovery

On day 5 of your epic Montenegro Itinerary, you can start the morning with a scenic drive to Tivat, a charming coastal town known for its luxury marina and waterfront promenade. Stop by Porto Montenegro, a world-class marina with upscale shops, cafes, and yacht clubs. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at one of the trendy cafes overlooking the marina.

Late Morning: Explore the Maritime Heritage Museum, housed in a former naval base, and learn about Tivat’s rich maritime history and culture. Don’t miss the chance to stroll along the beautiful seafront promenade, lined with palm trees and offering stunning views of the Bay of Kotor.

Be sure to visit the iconic Kanli Kula fortress for panoramic views of the town and surrounding coastline.

Late Afternoon: Take a break from sightseeing and relax at one of Herceg Novi’s cozy coffee shops, such as Caffe Kafeterija or Peter’s Pie and Coffee. Enjoy a cup of freshly brewed Montenegrin coffee or indulge in a sweet treat like baklava or krempita.

Evening: As the sun begins to set, head to Herceg Novi’s waterfront promenade and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant specializing in fresh seafood and Mediterranean cuisine. Savor the flavors of the Adriatic as you dine al fresco. You will love the sound of waves lapping against the shore in the background. After dinner, take a leisurely stroll along the promenade and soak up the romantic atmosphere of this coastal gem.

Day 7 Dormitory National Park

If you still feel that you have the energy to explore new places, drive to the northern part of the country. It takes you around 2 hours to get there, but the breathtaking views will make your trip worth it. Embark on a scenic hike in the park, taking photos of the Tara River Canyon and Black Lake.
