5 Reasons to visit Lisbon and Why You’ll Love It

Thinking about visiting Lisbon but are not sure if you have plenty of reasons to do so? I have been lucky enough to visit this charming city a couple of times in the past years and so I can tell you everything you need to know to convince you why you should consider Lisbon as your next destination. Here are 5 reasons to visit Lisbon!

Said to be founded by Ulysses, Lisbon is Portugal’s capital city stretched on 7 hills (some say even 8). I love a good hike, especially when these hikes have something to show for. This is the case for this city. Be ready to explore charming corners and one of the most energetic cities in Europe!

5 Reasons to visit Lisbon Portugal: Unique aspects

If you’ve been dreaming of a city break that blends stunning views, mouthwatering cuisine, and a welcoming atmosphere, Lisbon might just be your next favorite escape. Ready to discover why this Portuguese gem deserves a top spot on your list?

THE VIEWS OVER LISBON

Rising above the estuary of Tejo River, Lisbon is a city that’s made to be admired—especially for its breathtaking views. And if you’re like me and love a good climb with a reward at the top, Lisbon’s got you covered.

This city is famously built on seven hills, which means panoramic viewpoints are part of everyday life here. Whether you’re chasing that perfect golden-hour sunset, looking for a scenic spot to sip your coffee, or just want to pause and breathe in the beauty, Lisbon delivers every single time.

One of my absolute favorite spots is the Miradouro (viewing spot in Portuguese) de São Pedro de Alcântara. This terrace feels like a little oasis in the city, with lush gardens, fountains, and sweeping views stretching all the way to the Tagus River and the iconic São Jorge Castle. By late afternoon, you’ll find a mix of locals, artists sketching away, and visitors sipping vinho verde while the sky turns pink. It’s the kind of place where you could stay for hours and still not want to leave—and honestly, I usually don’t.

SAFE TO VISIT

One of the things I’ve appreciated about Lisbon is the fact that I’ve felt safe. It has to be one of the safest capital cities that I’ve visited in Europe. Of course, I encourage you to use common sense, in the same way you don’t go in the shady part of a town or you don’t take your most expensive jewellery with you on a walk. Police is present on the streets and in usual public areas such as the metro station. Tourism is an important part of the economy, so Lisbon invests heavily to keep the tourists happy and safe.

LISBON-AFFORDABLE DESTINATION

Lisbon has to be one of the most budget-friendly capital cities I’ve visited in Europe. Honestly, for what you get here—the food, the views, the culture—you’ll find incredible value for your money.

One thing that really stood out to me was how affordable public transport is. A single ride on the metro, bus, or famous yellow tram costs just €1.85, or you can grab a 24-hour ticket for €7.00, which covers all public transport, including the iconic Elevador da Glória funicular that takes you up to some of the city’s best viewpoints.

When it comes to eating out, look for the Prato do Dia (Meal of the Day)—it’s how the locals do it. For around €10–12, you’ll usually get a hearty bowl of soup, a filling main dish (often fresh fish or grilled meat), dessert, and even a coffee to finish. It’s one of the best ways to enjoy an authentic Portuguese meal without spending much. Just a quick tip—always check the menu and prices before sitting down, especially in tourist-heavy areas. That way, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting—and avoid surprises on the bill.

GASTRONOMY IN LISBON

At first sight, you would think that the flavors found in Lisbon follow the tradition of the Iberic and Mediterranean cuisine. Although this is partly true, you will be surprised to find what Lisbon has to offer. From strong spices such as cinnamon, saffron and cumin, remembering the Moorish times, to seafood influenced by the colonial heritage there is a local flavor to indulge in.

Don’t forget to try Bacalhau, which is Portugal’s favorite fish. Another must-try is Frango no Churrasco—Portugal’s famous piri-piri chicken, marinated with spices, grilled to perfection, and usually served with a side of crispy fries or rice. Simple, but absolutely addictive.

And let’s not forget the sweet finale: Pastéis de Nata, those creamy custard tarts with perfectly flaky pastry, slightly caramelized on top. The most famous spot to try them is Pastéis de Belém, where the recipe has been a secret since 1837—but honestly, you’ll find delicious versions in cafés all over the city. Sprinkle a little cinnamon on top, order an espresso, and you’ve basically mastered dessert, Lisbon-style.

SOMETHING FOR EVERY TRAVELER

One of the things I love most about Lisbon is that it really has something special for every kind of traveler. Whether you’re here for the history, the beaches, or just good weather and good food—you’ll find it all. Packing for Lisbon is refreshingly easy, too, because the city enjoys mild, pleasant weather nearly all year round. And if you’re someone who loves combining city breaks with beach days, you’ll be happy to know that some of Europe’s most beautiful beaches are just a short train ride away—places like Cascais and Costa da Caparica are local favorites.

For the culture lovers, Lisbon’s rich history is everywhere you look. From the ancient walls of Castelo de São Jorge, with panoramic views stretching across the city, to the iconic Torre de Belém, standing proudly by the river. And if music moves you, don’t miss the Museum of Fado—a whole space dedicated to Portugal’s soulful, melancholic musical tradition. Whatever your style of travel is—laid-back beach vibes, cultural deep dives, or just eating your way through a beautiful city—Lisbon knows how to deliver.

All in all, I highly recommend this destination. And these are only 5 reasons to visit Lisbon. You can also check my Pinterest account for more photos from my trip and travel inspiration!
